Just a quick questions. I recently received some money from my late Mother’s estate. I was thinking of buying coins, like rare coins, silver, gold, that are rated MS70. Does anyone think this is a good investment? If not, what would be in your opinion. Thanks for your help!
Gold coins especially.
Coin and stamp collecting are usually very poor investments, unless you are very knowledgeable on the subject. You’re better off investing in an index-based mutual fund, such as an S&P 500 index fund.
No, dont waste your time with rare stuff, just look for bullion coins that are close to the spot price in gold/ silver.
These are a much better investment.
Modern coins certified MS70 are very common these days, and are often overgraded and overpriced. The only certified and slabbed coins I would trust are from NGC, PCGS, and ANACS. Even then you really need to know what you are buying. If you want to start learning about numismatics, a good place to start is the “Red Book” found in the link below. You likely would be better off in a simpler investment of some other sort.
